Futuwwa: The Art of Sacred Manhood


Ustadh Emin: Teaching daily classes on futuwwa (spiritual chivalry) and self-knowledge/traditional Islamic psychology.

Emin (Emilio) Alzueta is a professor of liberal arts and humanities, a poet and translator. He studied English and Spanish literature and humanities as well as philosophy. Within the Islamic tradition, he has studied theology, tasawwuf, and intellectual history with traditional teachers in Turkey, UK and Spain. He has taught courses and lectures in a variety of subjects, such as theology, metaphysics, sufism, history and civilization of Al-Andalus, aesthetics, and traditional psychology, in countries such as Spain, Lebanon, Turkey and Bosnia. He is the author or editor of 6 books, and translator of the other 6, all in Spanish.

 

Abdul Malik: Instructing capoeira and carpentry classes to develop self-awareness, physical strength, and body coordination.

Abdul Malik Wheeler is a UK-born physical movement teacher, trainer, and carpenter who has lived in southern Spain for nearly 20 years. He specialises in capoeira, multi-faceted combat game and art form that has its roots in African chivalric principles and wisdom traditions. Commencing training in 1995  and licensed to teach in 2001 by his master, Mestre Laércio, he has led groups in the UK and Spain, working especially with marginalised youth and adults. His approach combines capoeira, acrobalance, methods of combat, evasion and breath work to foster self-enquiry and well-being in line with Futuwwa principles.

 

Cooking Lessons with Chef Nabil

Whether it’s a Mediterranean feast, a local wedding celebration, a comforting winter soup, or a refreshing glass of homemade hibiscus juice on a summer day, Chef Nabil is a master teacher and has touched countless people with both his dishes and personality. With over 25 years of experience, including his role as head chef at a beloved local restaurant, Chef Nabil is a treasure. Known for his calmness in the kitchen and the love he pours into every dish, he is not just a master chef but also a teacher in the kitchen, inspiring others with his artistry and passion. His presentations are as beautiful as his food, making him a key pillar in the lives of locals and visitors.

 

Ayman: Teaching the principles of poetry as a form of communication to improve speaking skills and clarity of thought.

Ayman Muhammad is a creative, working across photography, design, and poetry. Formerly part of the acclaimed hip hop duo The Planets, he has collaborated with high profile American artists. For over 15 years, he’s been part of a weekly group in Nottingham that recites the Shimmering Light Mawlid by Habib Umar. His studies in Morocco and Tarim in 2019 deepened his connection to traditional Islamic poetry and inspired Breezes of the Elect, where he helped select content, design the book, edit translations, and lead its successful online launch. Ayman also supports humanitarian work globally with various charities.

 

Abdulqadir: Leading Quran recitation and providing instruction on Azahara grounds on maintenance and permaculture. He will also facilitate men’s circles for sharing thoughts.

Abdalqadir Schaller, born into Islam to an American father and Mexican mother, was raised in the USA, Spain, and the UK. He directed a Quran school in Mallorca for 10 years before shifting to farming and permaculture. Now, he helps manage Azahara International, guiding journeys through Al-Andalus. Committed to the future, he educates Muslim youth in resilience and self-reliance, focusing on self-knowledge and meaningful companionship.

 

Hamza, our munshid who will be leading on drumming and singing during the evening spiritual gatherings, as well as supporting Ayman’s poetry classes.

Hamza Dinshah, 19, is a London-born percussionist who moved to Granada in 2017. He has studied Islamic spiritual music for over 12 years, beginning at Desert Echo Daff School and later at Pearls of Islam Drumming School.

In Granada, he trained with musicians such as Muhammad Domínguez, Jaouad Jadli, and Efrén López, deepening his connection to Sufi and Arab musical traditions. More recently, he has explored Qawwali to reconnect with his Indo-Pakistani heritage.

Since 2021, Hamza has performed with artists like Al Firdaus Ensemble and Medina Whiteman. His current project fuses Qawwali, Arabic, and flamenco music, highlighting the shared roots of these traditions through concerts across the Alpujarra.
